Labor Day Job Site Theft: 32k Pounds of Lumber

What would it take for thieves to steal 32 thousand pounds of lumber in broad daylight? A national holiday for one thing. We wish our new customer had called us in before they got hit, but we’re glad we can protect their site from now on!

The Loot:
32 thousand pounds of lumber worth an estimated $15k.

The Protection:
A fence.

The Scenario:
Thieves waited until Labor Day to hit this site, knowing that workers would be off spending time with their families. They made an estimated ten trips in a light vehicle to clear out 32k pounds of lumber from the site in broad daylight on labor day, making off with $15k worth of lumber.

Likely Culprits:
Work had not even started on the site, so potentially there were insiders at the lumber supply company. It’s also likely that it was simply a “drive by” committed by thieves prowling job sites looking for an easy score on a national holiday.

Pro-Vigil Job Site Security Solution:
Now that they have Pro-Vigil on their job site thieves will pass them up when they’re out prowling for a site to hit. They know better than to tangle with a site with live remote security that never sleeps.

Job Site Theft: $50k in New Tools Stolen

There’s nothing like a $50k loss to get GCs calling us up for some live remote job site surveillance. This recent hit showed us that thieves who go unnoticed will go to ANY length to rip you off.

The Loot:
$50k in new tools

The Protection:
Conex box with a pickup truck parked to block the front doors

The Location:
500 acre University job site

The Scenario:
Thieves used a key to start a Skytrak and drove it through a maze of pitfalls and trenches where they’re about to rough in the plumbing. It’s dangerous in the daytime - at night with headlights it would be impossible for someone who didn’t know the site to navigate.

Thieves used the Skytrak to move the truck that blocked the doors of the conex with the tools. They then bashed in the doors with the Skytrak and made off with 50 thousand dollars worth of brand new power tools.

Likely Culprits:
It seems highly likely that it was an inside job because the thieves used a key on the Skytrak, could navigate in the dark across a maze of pitfalls and ditches and they knew exactly which conex box held the tools.

Pro-Vigil Job Site Security Solution:
Our highly-visible surveillance units on their site flash police strobes and sirens whenever our security team detects movement on site. The video will help nail any future inside thieves who have no loyalty to their employers.

If you get hit once, shame on the thief. If you get hit twice, shame on you for not installing Pro-Vigil’s live remote job site security! Contact Pro-Vigil today for a free security consultation on your job site!

Be a Hero: Measure Your Construction Site Security Results

Is corporate breathing down your neck to keep costs down? Of course they are, they’re trying to run a business! This becomes a problem if they start investigating YOUR construction budget to look for excess spending. If you want to be a corporate hero (hey, there’s no shame in that) you should develop baseline metrics for your security programs.

It’s not enough to tell corporate that your security stopped a break in on the job sites you manage. This is great news and you’ll get a pat on the back but you’re still not speaking corporate’s language. Here are some of the data points you can track that will help you speak more clearly in the universal language of money:

1) Total number of incidents of theft or vandalism on your job site or sites
2) Total dollar amount spent - including man hours - on replacing vehicles, equipment and materials
3) Number of averted incidents
4) Number of incidents per month/year
5) Cost of security services

If you divide the total cost of security incidents for a year by the number of incidents then you’ve got your average cost of a security incident. Now when you’re talking with corporate and you’re all set to brag a little about stopping three incidents you can ALSO tell them exactly how much you saved.

Note:
Another important metric is your total cost of security services. Pro-Vigil provides live, remote construction site monitoring that stops incidents before they start at a cost that’s less than video cameras or guards. Copper Theft Still Rampant, Especially in Texas

The unfortunate rash of metal theft, especially copper, shows no signs of letting up. CSO Online’s Scott Berinato sums it up well in his recent article “Copper Theft: The Metal Theft Epidemic”: “China needs metal, and junkies need crystal meth. Where these two facts intersect, there’s metal theft.”

With copper still at over $3 a pound it doesn’t seem likely that thieves will stop targeting the valuable metal any time soon.

Major Copper Thefts in Dallas:
Two major thefts in Dallas had Time Warner offering a $10,000 reward early last month for tips on metal-related crimes that cost them thousands. The thefts stopped phone and internet for over 45,000 Time Warner customers.

Copper Theft in Austin:
Meanwhile, some of Austin’s Habitat for Humanity new built homes have been hit for copper too, causing heartache amongst volunteers and the homes’ recipients alike.

It looks like NO ONE is safe from metal theft, and with such theft - and the price of copper - on the rise it’s important for you to protect your construction site with live, remote surveillance to scare off any thieves before they get started.
